18. What is a karat?
In jewelry terminology, a karat may have two meanings. If one is referring to gems, a karat is the weight unit which is equivalent to 200 milligrams or a fifth of a gram. When discussing gold, the word karat refers to purity. This is the 1/24 of the total alloy mass. Generally speaking, the most common alloys are 585 thousandth corresponding to 14 karats (14/24); 750 thousandth, 18 karats (18/24), and 1,000 thousandth, karat gold (24/24). For technical reasons, 24 karat gold is considered 999 thousandth. The term is normally abbreviated as kt.

19. What criteria are used to evaluate the quality of a diamond?
These are the famous "four Cs:"”:
  • Carat - weight
  • A carat is the precision unit used to weigh diamonds. A carat is equivalent to 0.20 grams.
  • Cut
  • The quality of the cut of a diamond is determined by its proportions. The better the proportions, the more light is reflected and the shinier it is.
  • Clarity
  • A diamond's internal imperfections are called inclusions. Their absence or presence determines a diamond's degree of clarity and therefore, its value. Their size and position in the stone are very important in determining degree of clarity.
  • Color
  • Diamonds range from white to colored. Color is a factor which determines a diamond's value. The less color it has, the higher its value. The color GIA scale ranges from D (total lack of color, exceptional white) to Z (colored).
